David Drake, Artistic Director
I’m David Drake, Artistic Director of the Provincetown Theater since 2017. I’m an Obie Award–winning playwright, director, and performer with deep roots in both New York and Provincetown. From collaborating with Taylor Mac to starring in The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me, my career has been about bold storytelling, queer visibility, and building community through theater.
My Story
David Drake has been making theater since he was a kid and has served as Artistic Director of the Provincetown Theater since 2017.
In New York, he’s directed at venues including Rattlestick, The Flea, Soho Playhouse, and Joe’s Pub. A frequent collaborator with Taylor Mac, David developed and directed The Lily’s Revenge (Obie Award) and helmed the world tour of The Be(a)st of Taylor Mac.
As an actor, he originated roles in A Language of Their Own (The Public), End of the World Party, and the 1996 revival of The Boys in the Band. Regionally, he’s performed at A.R.T., Huntington, Arena Stage, Barrington Stage, and the Old Globe. On screen, his credits include Philadelphia, Longtime Companion, After Louie (with Alan Cumming), and appearances on The Good Wife, Law & Order, Vinyl, and more.
David is also the Obie Award–winning writer and star of The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me, which played off-Broadway for a year, toured internationally, and was adapted into a feature film. He got his Equity card replacing Charles Busch in Vampire Lesbians of Sodom at the Provincetown Playhouse.
He’s taught at Abrons Arts Center and MICA, and received residencies from BRICLab, Dixon Place, DTW, and Clemente Soto Vélez.
