AUTOCRAT INC.

Cody Sullivan returns to provincetown theater
Tuesdays in June at 7 pm!
After two sold-out runs of his play Town Meeting in 2024, Provincetown playwright Cody Sullivan will preview his new play, AUTOCRAT INC., at Provincetown Theater this June. AUTOCRAT INC. marks a departure from Sullivan’s beloved Provincetown-focused productions, including Town Meeting, The Dune Inn, and See Monsters, and interrogates larger political concerns, such as police overreach and abuse of power.

In AUTOCRAT INC., Cody Sullivan, uses his 34-year-old gay body to inhabit the members of the Leclerc family, a French-Canadian-descended, lower-middle-class family living in South Central Massachusetts. Matriarch, Maureen, is doing the taxes for her seashell figurine business. Her granddaughter, Tessa, is home from college for the weekend, and her grandson, Often, is diligently following an Ina Garten recipe for cookies. Maureen’s son, Marcus, a cop, has assisted federal agents who have come to their small town. Uncle Kurt is into historical S&M, specifically torture inflicted to punish those who stood up for their convictions: The Quakers in 17th century New England who refused to go to Puritan Mass, the Artists who refused to play McCarthy’s games, and the Jews, Muslims, and heretics punished by the Spanish Inquisition.
What is the torture for this family in Massachusetts? And why is it centered around an old bottle of Autocrat Coffee Syrup?
"[Sullivan's] work requires a generosity of spirit, an open mind, and no shackles on creativity of any sort. And the results are fabulous, ephemeral creations."
